Summary

THE MOST PROMISING SUBSTITUTE FOR R12 ON AN INTERNATIONAL SCALE WILL BE R134A, WHOSE PROPERTIES, HOWEVER, ARE STILL LITTLE KNOWN. BUT COMPARATIVELY SIMPLE METHODS USED FOR CALCULATING REFRIGERANT THERMAL AND ENERGY PARAMETERS MAKE IT POSSIBLE TO CALCULATE THE CHANGES IN ESSENTIAL CRITERIA CAUSED BY A SWITCH TO ALTERNATIVE REFRIGERANTS. THE FACT THAT IMPORTANT R134A PROPERTIES ARE LESS FAVOURABLE THAN THOSE OF R12 WILL LEAD TO CONSEQUENCES IN THE DESIGN OF NEW REFRIGERATING MACHINES OPERATING ON ALTERNATIVE REFRIGERANTS. R22, R124 AND AMMONIA ARE REFERRED TO FOR COMPARISON PURPOSES.
