Summary

The paper gives the general properties of heat counter-current exchanger networks. The new definition of pinch points leads to an original study of pinch principles imposed by the optimal energy recovery. It is proved that some warming up or cooling demands, called strictly consistent demands, can be satisfied, under given conditions, only in counter-current networks. The thermodynamic approach is used to study the possibilities to reduce the number of heat exchangers. From a review of these possibilities, some penalizing factors such as a wrong arrangement of temperature intervals under consideration, near conditions to the strictly consistent demands and variations with temperature of specific heats are identified.
