Summary

THE THERMOELECTRIC EFFECT IN A SUPERCONDUCTING RING IS CONSIDERED WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE MACROSCOPIC GINZBURG-LANDAU THEORY. AN EXACT SOLUTION IS OBTAINED FOR THE MODEL CASE OF AN HOMOGENEOUS SUPERCONDUCTING CYLINDER IN WHICHTHE NORMAL EXCITATION CURRENT IS PRESCRIBED. A PROFOUND ANALOGY IS FOUND TO EXIST BETWEEN THE BEHAVIOUR OF THE THERMOELECTRIC SYSTEM AND BEHAVIOUR OF AN HOLLOW SUPERCONDUCTING CYLINDER IN AN EXTERNAL FIELD. THETRANSITION OF A THERMOELECTRIC RING TO THE NORMAL STATE SHOULD NOT OCCUR AT THE CRITICAL TEMPERATURE BUT AT LOWER TEMPERATURES. POSSIBLE HYSTERESIS EFFECTS AND THE ROLE OF IMPURITIES, FLUCTUATIONS AND INHOMOGENEITIES IN THE THERMOELECTRIC SYSTEM ARE DISCUSSED.
