FREE COOLING FOR CHILLED WATER SYSTEMS, IN WHICH SYSTEM WATER PASSES THROUGH AIR-COOLED COILS OR EVAPORATIVE WATER COOLERS, INVOLVES ELABORATE CHANGEOVER VALVING AND HIGH ADDITIONAL EQUIPMENT COSTS. THE THERMOSIPHON SYSTEM UTILISES A SPECIALLY DESIGNED FLOODED EVAPORATOR/WATER CHILLER AND A CONVENTIONAL EVAPORATIVE CONDENSER. WHENSUFFICIENT DIFFERENCE IS AVAILABLE BETWEEN CHILLED WATER TEMPERATURE AND AMBIENT WET BULB, THE COMPRESSOR IS BYPASSED AND REFRIGERANT VAPOUR FROM THE EVAPORATOR PASSES DIRECTLY TO THE CONDENSER, CONDENSATE RETURNING BY GRAVITY. EFFICIENCY IS GREATEST ON A SERIES STAGED WATER COOLING SYSTEM WITH HIGH RETURN TEMPERATURE. AN EXAMPLE IS MAIN-FRAME COMPUTER COOLING. THE EVAPORATORS USE ENHANCED EXTERNAL SURFACE TUBES TO PROMOTE BOILING AT LOW TEMPERATURE DIFFERENCE. A SYSTEM IS DESCRIBED, THE TUBE SURFACE EVALUATED, AND A CASE STUDY SHOWS OWNING COSTS COULD BE 60% OF A CONVENTIONAL SYSTEM. LOW ENERGY REQUIRED WILL ALSO SAVE POWER STATION CO2 EMISSION. D.W.H.
