Tool for SPF determination of air-to-air and air-to-water heat pumps in single-family dwellings.

Summary

The seasonal performance factor (SPF) of a heat pump is the key factor to compute its annual primary energy consumption. A recent European Directive makes mandatory a legal calculation method for this SPF. The authors present a method based on European Norm EN 15316 with improvements to take into account the thermal behavior of the dwelling. It has been developed for the Belgian climate, for single-family dwellings and for reversible air-to-air and air-to-water heat pumps used for space heating and cooling. It determines annual cooling and heating SPF as well as space heating and cooling demands. The results of the method have been compared to experimental values obtained by monitoring. This comparison shows that the method is well-suited for the estimation of heat needs and heating SPF. However, it is not accurate for cooling needs and cooling SPF because the real cooling needs of the inhabitants during the summer period is difficult to model.
