Summary

OBSERVATIONS ARE PRESENTED IN THE SHIPMENT OF LATE-SEASON KIWIFRUIT FROM CALIFORNIA TO EUROPE BY THREE DIFFERENT ROUTES USING SEA ONLY AND COMBINATIONS OF LAND AND SEA TRANSPORT. TIME-TEMPERATURE HISTORIES ARE PRESENTED TOGETHER WITH QUALITY TESTS ON ARRIVAL. LOSS OF FIRMNESS OF SOME BATCHES WAS THE MOST SERIOUS DEFECT BUT THIS APPEARED TO BE DUE MAINLY TO SOFTENING THAT OCCURRED IN STORAGE PRIOR TO SHIPMENT.
