Summary

DURING 1985-88, FRUITS OF THE CULTIVARS SUMMERRED, AROMA AND LOBO WERE STORED AT 2-3 DEG C FOR 98-120 DAYS AND MONITORED FOR WEIGHT LOSS, QUALITY AND SKIN CHARACTERISTICS. WEIGHT LOSS WAS HIGH (ABOUT 7%) WHEN RELATIVE HUMIDITY WAS BELOW 90%, AND IT CONTINUED AFTER THE STORAGE PERIOD. HUMIDIFICATION OF THE AIR IN THE STORES IS RECOMMENDED. TOTAL WEIGHT LOSS AT LOW RH WAS GREATEST IN LOBO AND LEAST IN SUMMERRED. ELECTRON MICROSCOPY OF THE SKINS REVEALED CRACKS, WHICH DIFFERED IN SIZE AMONG THE CULTIVARS AND HARVEST DATES AND AMONG THE DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE FRUIT.
