Transport and distribution: two real and very different features of refrigeration on the road.

Trasporto e distribuzione: due realtà molto diverse del freddo su strada.

Author(s) : MANCASSOLA G.

Type of article: Article

Summary

The author analyses the respective fundamental requirements of transport and distribution and their relevant effects on the design of trucks, truck bodies and refrigerating units. The author then expresses various suggestions: (i) the sizing of the refrigerating equipment should be customised, taking into account various data, such as the duration of service, the number and duration of door openings, the heat transfer coefficient of walls, the outside temperature, the temperature of the products entering the vehicle, the time available for re-freezing the eutectic mixture; (ii) special attention should be paid to periodic defrosting; (iii) the refrigerating unit should be slightly oversized, so as to cover the load due to the cooling of the goods entering the vehicle at temperatures above -25 °C; and (iv) the author gives other recommendations: to load the trucks in the evening; to fix all damage in truck insulation or body; to open all outlets during and after defrosting, until the interior of the truck is dry; to limit the duration of door openings and check maintenance of door gaskets.
