Summary

Hydrocarbon refrigerants were one of the important subjects at the IIR conference on Natural Working Fluids '98 in Oslo, Norway. In spite of its inflammability, isobutane has been used for refrigerators widely in Europe, and other hydrocarbons, such as propane, have been examined to use for heat pumps and car air-conditioners. Dimethylether has been also examined as a drop-in alternative to R12 refrigerators. There has not yet been full consensus on use of hydrocarbon refrigerants. Further consideration on risk and efficiency was required for optimal application with medium or large refrigerant charges.
