Hydrocarbons are excellent refrigerants: their flammability doesn't prevent their use.
Koolwaterstoffen zijn uitstekende koudemiddelen: brandbaarheid geen belemmering voor toepassing.
Type of article: Article
Summary
Hydrocarbons, such as propane or isobutane, are perfect refrigerants to be used in refrigerating plants: they are inexpensive and they have high energy efficiencies. Because of their flammability, they are not used on a large scale. A risk-analysis of an air drier by TNO-MEP (Netherlands) shows that this is often not justified. Under the right conditions, these natural refrigerants are excellent and safe substitutes for large-scale synthetic refrigerants still in use.
