Summary

THE WESTERN AUSTRALIAN DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE IS STUDYING TWO NOVEL USES OF HEAT PUMPS IN THE FOOD INDUSTRY, THE FIRST BEING A DRYER FOR THE PRODUCTION OF APPLE CRISPS. THIS UNIT WAS ORIGINALLY CONSTRUCTED AS A RECIRCULATING DRYER. THIS MODIFIED UNIT ACHIEVED THE DESIRED RESULT WITH A COP (OVERALL) OF UP TO 7.5. THE SECOND APPLICATION WAS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF STEAM UNDER A PARTIAL VACUUM FOR USE IN THE LOW TEMPERATURE DEODORIZATION OF MUTTON. THE MODIFIED UNIT PERFORMED AS REQUIRED ALTHOUGH THE COP (HEAT PUMP) COULD BE IMPROVED FROM ITS PRESENT 2.3.
