Two-stage system uses R22: inventor claims supermarket refrigerator breakthrough.

Summary

Current supermarket systems use R22 with all the problems produced by compressor staging or liquid injection to overcome high discharge temperatures. The author suggests instead a cascade system in which a central high stage plant chills water to be circulated as the condensing medium for individual low stage units cooling small groups of display cases. By using scroll compressors in the low stage units, most of the local noise problem would be overcome. Any suitable refrigerant could be used in both stages, and glycol could replace water if a lower intermediate temperature is required. Because the main piping loop could be of PVC for use with water or glycol instead of a refrigerant, the total cost would be lower and refrigerant leakage less likely. D.W.H.
