Type of article: Article

Summary

Without extra government support, British companies dealing with superconductivity will fall behind their competitors in the USA and Japan. The solution put to the government is the backing of a three-year joint initiative, involving the Department of Trade and Industry, the Science and Engineering Research Council, the Defence Research Agency and industrial participants, costing an estimated GBP 2 million a year over this period. At present, superconductivity industry is at a crisis point; it is necessary to act now. J.V.
