UNDERGROUND STORAGE AT LOW TEMPERATURE AND ITS APPLICATIONS.

LE STOCKAGE SOUTERRAIN A BASSE TEMPERATURE ET SES APPLICATIONS.

Author(s) : BOULANGER A., LUYTEN W.

Summary

THE ENGINEERS HAVE NOT BEEN SUCCESSFUL IN DEVELOPING UNDERGROUND STORAGE AT VERY LOW TEMPERATURE. GEOSTOCK (FRANCE) AND DISTRIGAZ (BELGIUM) JOINED FORCES TO BUILT AND OPERATE A PILOT PLANT NEAR ANTWERP IN BELGIUM. THE TEST WAS SUCCESSFUL AND BOTH COMPANIES HAVE ACQUIRED NOW SUFFICIENT KNOWLEDGE TO STORE LIQUEFIED GASES AT LOW TEMPERATURE DOWN TO 77 K (-196 DEG C). THE PAPER DESCRIBES BRIEFLY THE RESULTS OF THIS TEST AND GIVES SOME INFORMATION ABOUT THE LABORATORY MEASUREMENTS AND THE MATHEMATICAL MODELS SPECIALLY DEVELOPED FOR THIS PURPOSE. THE PAPER PROVIDES AN OVERVIEW OF THE POSSIBLE APPLICATIONS OF THIS NEW TECHNOLOGY AND ITS ADVANTAGES. AS AN EXAMPLE, THE STORAGE OF FROZEN FOODS IS MENTIONED.
