TEST CRYOGENIC STORAGE AT SCHELLE: RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS.

Author(s) : BOULANGER A., LUYTEN W.

Summary

THE AUTHORS GIVE A BRIEF CHRONOLOGICAL SURVEY OF THE DIFFERENT UNDERGROUND CRYOGENIC STORAGE TESTS OVER THE WORLD AND DESCRIBE THE TEST CARRIED OUT AT SCHELLE (BELGIUM) AND GIVE THE MAIN RESULTS. THIS TEST SHOWED THAT A CAVE IN CLAY COULD STORE LIQUID PRODUCTS TO A TEMPERATURE OF 77 K (-196 DEG C). IT PROVED THAT LABORATORY MEASURING PROCEDURES AND MATHEMATICAL MODELS GIVE A CORRECT PREDICTION OF STORAGE BEHAVIOUR. THOSE CONTROLLING SUITABLE TECHNIQUES ARE NOW ABLE TO ACHIEVE LPG STORAGE IN ALL TYPES OF ROCK AND LNG STORAGE IN ROCKS HAVING A BEHAVIOUR SIMILAR TO THAT OF CLAY.
