THE AUTHORS DESCRIBE THE TYPES OF CHEMICAL BREAKDOWN AND POLLUTION ADDITION SUFFERED BY A CFC REFRIGERANT WITHIN A REFRIGERATION SYSTEM. BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO PROCESS USED CFC FORRE-USE, IT IS ESSENTIAL TO UNDERSTAND THE PROCESSES WHICH MAY HAVE OCCURRED. IN PARTICULAR IT IS IMPORTANT TO REALISE THAT IT IS THE CHLORINE AND NOT THE FLUORINE COMPONENT WHICH IS LIABLE TO BE INVOLVED IN COMBINATIONS WITH OTHER SUBSTANCES. ALSO THAT A CHLORINE COMBINATION SUCH AS HYDROCHLORIC ACID WILL HAVE REACTED WITH OTHER MATERIALS. IT IS STRESSED THAT CLEANING PROCESSES ARE POSSIBLE AND THE NECESSARY EQUIPMENT IS AVAILABLE TO PRODUCE RE-USABLE CFCS. D.W.H.
