Uniform codes for ammonia revised.
Type of article: Periodical article
Summary
The International Institute of Ammonia Refrigeration has persuaded the ICBO (International Conference of Building Officials) in the USA to accept modifications to its safety codes regarding the use of ammonia in closed systems. The changes include the requirement of a machinery room above a specified charge, which is ventilated, but not classified as a hazardous location. Relief valves must discharge to a water tank or similar, but emergency manual valves are not required. Detectors must be fitted, set to activate at 50ppm and automatic shutdown of ammonia flow from the plant room is essential. D.W.H.
