THE A. OUTLINES A NUMBER OF CASES FOR WHICH JOULE-THOMSON THROTTLING MAY BE MORE SUITABLE ALTHOUGH LESS ECONOMIC IN OPERATION THAN A TURBO-EXPANDER. THESE INCLUDE LOW GAS RATES WHERE A SMALL EXPANDER MAY BE AN EXPENSIVE ITEM, GAS RATES FLUCTUATING OUTSIDE THE RANGE ACCOMODATED BY AN EXPANDER, AND THE GENERAL FACTOR OF SIMPLICITY. THE HISTORY OF THE JOULE-THOMSON EFFECT IS OUTLINED AND A NUMBER OF SUCCESSFUL APPLICATIONS ARE ILLUSTRATED AND DESCRIBED. D.W.H.
