Summary
Reduction of the risks of ammonia refrigeration plants accidents is directly related to the reduction of their specific ammonia content. The development of autonomous ammonia refrigeration machines using modern heat exchange apparatuses and coolants solves this problem. Their specific ammonia content is 0.11 – 1.08 kg/kW, while for direct expansion ammonia systems it is in the range of 8 – 20 kg/kW. Foreign ammonia chillers are used at Russian plants. Their characteristics are described; design features and the data on the operation of chillers at domestic enterprises are presented. The ways for further improvement of chillers are considered: transition from plate to shell-and-plate heat exchangers to reduce specific ammonia content, increase of efficiency under partial load conditions to increase the overall energy efficiency of the machine.
