Use of CO2 as primary and secondary refrigerant in supermarket applications.

Author(s) : CHRISTENSEN K. G.

Summary

CO2 as primary and secondary refrigerant directly used in the cabinets is investigated. Two different plants have been built in the laboratory at Danish Technological Institute, viz. a two-stage ammonia plant using CO2 as secondary refrigerant and an ammonia and carbon dioxide cascade plant. Measurements on an EN441 approved freezing cabinet using R404A have been carried out. The existing evaporator is used with CO2 as secondary refrigerant and new evaporators especially designed for CO2 are used for the cascade solution with dry expansion in the cabinets. From these tests CO2 is considered as a very fine alternative to HFCs in supermarket applications.
