Summary

In Southern Africa the predominant lubrication used in ammonia compressors have been up to now napthenic based lubricants. There is a trend around the world however to move to new lubricants based on hydrocracked paraffinic base oils. In Southern Africa there are now two brands on the market formulated from hydrocracked base oils that are proving very successful. The paper looks at the hydrocracking process and the advantageous properties they have for the Southern African market.
