UTILIZATION OF FINITE DIFFERENCE AND FINITE ELEMENT METHODS IN SIMULATING TRANSIENT HEAT TRANSFER UNDER LNG STORAGE TANKS.
Author(s) : TIMMERHAUS K. D., BARNOCKY G.
Summary
WITH THE EVOLUTION OF COMPUTERS, THE FINITE ELEMENT AND FINITE DIFFERENCE TECHNIQUES HAVE EMERGEDAS USEFUL TOOLS FOR OBTAINING APPROXIMATE SOLUTIONS TO MANY PROBLEMS. HEAT TRANSFER UNDER LARGE LNG STORAGE TANKS PROVIDES A COMPLEX APPLICATION ILLUSTRATING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THESE TWOTU LNG MUST BE STORED AT CRYOGENIC TEMPERATURES, HEAT TRANSFER CONSIDERATIONS SIGNIFICANTLY INFLUENCE THE DESIGN CALCULATIONS OF SUCH STORAGE TANKS. THUS, A SIMULATION PERFORMED PRIOR TO CONSTRUCTION OF A STORAGE TANK PERMITS AN ANALYSIS OF THE STRUCTURAL REGIONS WHICHARE MOST LIKELY TO VIOLATE THE THERMAL SPECIFICATIONS. ALTERNATELY, THE SIMULATION MAY BE EMPLOYED TO REPRODUCE ACTUAL TEMPERATURE DATA OBTAINED FROM AN EXISTING STORAGE TANK TO FORECAST FUTURE THERMAL CONDITIONS UNDERNEATH THE TANK.
