Summary

Two cryomicroscope stages allowed visualisation of dehydratation, cryodehydratation and deformation of the alga by extracellular ice. In these investigations, intracellular-ice formation was observed, after ice nucleation of the extracellular solution, in many of the specimens examined. The paper discusses the requirement for cryomicroscope systems to simulate the cooling regimes used in controlled-rate coolers and the use of different optical techniques in the investigation of chilling and freezing events.
