Summary

The paper deals with the state of the art on water chillers with volumetric compressors. This analysis is focused on the energy issue. The following aspects are dealt with: refrigerants; the main components, such as compressors, condensers, evaporators and throttling valves; devices and methods for capacity control; how to manage the operation of the machine. Each of the points mentioned is analysed with reference to recent progress in technology, to their impact on energy efficiency, to the possibilities of improvements. Part-load running is considered to play a key role in improving the overall energy performance of the installation; to this end, the following techniques can be used: lowering the condensing temperature to the minimum level permitted by the climatic conditions; arising the evaporator temperature to the maximum level permitted by the decrease in the thermal load; using compressors able, if not to improve their intrinsic efficiency, at least to limit the fall in efficiency that often occurs at part load with the most common compressors.
