Part-load performance of on-off air-cooled chillers.
Author(s) : BENSAFI A., GAILLARD N., MORIN J. M.
Summary
The nominal energy efficiency ratio as defined and measured under European Standard EN 14511 does not enable the performance characterization of a chiller under real usage conditions. This is because the rating conditions and methods do not take into account the changes in outdoor conditions and building load. In order to calculate the real air-conditioning system electricity consumption, part-load performance must therefore be accounted for. In 2006, Eurovent Certification implemented a certification scheme to calculate an European seasonal energy efficiency ratio (ESEER) for staged capacity chillers. In order to extend the ESEER concept to the residential application sector on a sound and fair basis, testing was conducted at CETIAT on small capacity air-cooled chillers. This paper shows the testing methodology and the results obtained on an on-off air-cooled chiller which was tested at 100, 75, 50 and 25% loads at 35, 30, 25 and 20°C outdoor conditions. The results from this exhaustive testing show in particular that the part-load energy efficiency can be related to full load efficiency at all outdoor temperatures following a unique relationship. This means that on-off chiller part-load performance can be predicted from a number of full-load tests and only a single part-load test measurements. Alternatively, as a less accurate and default method, stand-by power measurement can be used to calculate part-load performance during cycling.
