Water vapour compression and adiabatic cooling in the process industry.

Author(s) : MADSBOLL H., ELEFSEN F.

Summary

For large cooling duties above 0 deg C, a water vapour compression system has environmental and energy advantages. The plant described was designed in association with sewage treatment and the separation of sludge and liquid. Because the water within the refrigeration circuit is the same water as that in the load circuit, and heat is rejected over cooling towers, there are no temperature differences for heat transfer in either evaporator or condenser. Hence chilled water leaves the evaporator at evaporation temperature, and condensing temperature is the same as the temperature of water leaving the cooling tower. The authors demonstrate such a plant, together with a mathematical model which allowed computer simulation for an average annual cycle. This will be compared with an actual installation at present being built. D.W.H.
