Summary
Demand for refrigerated transport by sea is currently growing at something like 1.5-2 million tons per year. In 1997, 23 new reefers totalling 214,000 m3 were put into service. The new-orders list for 1998 shows a total of 30 reefers with about 368,000 m3, and the 1999 list about 22 ships totalling some 340,000 m3. Annual charter rates are particularly good long-term planning indicators. These rates rise and fall in a four to seven-year cycle according to supply and demand. An upcurve starting in 1994 turned down again in 1998. The rising rates of recent years fuelled the present building boom.
