During the 8th IIR Conference on “Ammonia and CO2 Refrigeration Technologies” held on April 11-13, 2019 in Ohrid, North Macedonia, 51 quality papers were presented. These papers included 21 on ammonia, with eight focusing on low-charge systems, 22 on CO2 and eight on ammonia or CO2 plus another refrigerant.

Papers include:
•    Ammonia refrigeration: what can we expect in the future? by PACHAI A. C.
•    Development of a high efficient NH3/CO2 refrigeration system by HATTORI K. / ARIMOTO R. / TERASHIMA I.
•    End user perspective on transitioning away from HFC towards natural refrigerants by SCHALENBOURG D
•    Extreme low charge units with ammonia blend R723 applications in practice by SVINGÁL J.

The conference concentrated on the benefits as well as the need to move towards natural refrigerants and covered topics related to the design and applications of modern ammonia and CO2 systems, including heat pump system designs, new innovations, technical and safety guidelines as well as training materials. 180 participants attended from 33 different countries to hear five keynote speakers provide insight on the challenges, solutions and perspectives of the field.

Alexander Pachai, president of the IIR Working Group on Refrigeration Safety, lead dynamic group discussions on the importance of safety, training and security when handling ammonia and CO2 refrigerants.
