EPA targets illegal HFC imports in new AIM Act enforcement alert
The EPA issued an alert on enforcing the AIM Act, targeting illegal HFC imports and emphasizing recent actions to reduce these potent greenhouse gases by 85% by 2036 to combat climate change.
On September 6, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued an alert regarding its actions under the American Innovation and Manufacturing Act (AIM Act) to reduce the production and consumption of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). The alert provides information on compliance issues related to the importation of HFCs and highlights recent civil and criminal enforcement actions. This measure aims to address the climate crisis by ensuring that companies comply with the law to avoid penalties.
HFCs are commonly used in refrigeration and air conditioning. The global effort to phase down HFCs, once fully implemented, could reduce global warming by 0.5 degrees Celsius. The EPA, under the AIM Act of 2020, is tasked with reducing HFC production by 85% by 2036 and works to prevent the illegal trafficking of these substances.
So far in 2024, the EPA has settled nine civil cases involving the illegal importation of HFCs. The total fines amount to $115,551 for violations of the AIM Act.
