World air-to water heat pumps market

A few figures from the JARN.

In 2016, according to JARN, global air-to-water (ATW) heat pump demand reached 2.03 million units, an increase of 14.2% compared with 2015.

  • In China, by far the first world ATW heat pump market, demand reached 1.27 million (+22.7%), mainly driven by far-reaching Coal-to-Electricity Policy aimed at combatting air pollution by replacing conventional coal-fired boilers with electricity-driven ATW heat pumps in existing buildings and prioritizing them in new projects.

  • In Japan, the ATW heat pump market grew by 3.4% in 2016, with sales up to 420,600 units. Among residential air-source heat pump water heaters, Eco Cute units using CO2 continue to attract consumer’s attention, mainly for their high energy-saving performance and their ability to use less expensive nighttime electricity.

  • In Europe, the market reached 246,000 units (+0.8%). Of this total, France accounted for 58%, Germany for 14% and UK for 8%. Heat pumps currently account for around 5% of heating equipment used in Europe. However, due in particular to building codes setting tough energy requirements which often include an obligation to use renewable energy, their market share is exceeding 80% in new construction in Sweden and Switzerland, up to 40% in Finland and France and 30% in Germany
