Summary

SmartFresh TM (1-methylcyclopropene) has been tested on apples over the past five years with a view to obtaining approval for use. It is an effective tool for combating superficial scald and senescent scald, and for improving quality maintenance during the storage of apples and after removal from storage. There is a very significant difference in the firmness of treated and undertreated fruit. However, the treatment does entail some constraints, and fruit packing stations should work out their strategy carefully in order to derive maximum benefit from this new technology.
