Summary

MCP (1-methylcyclopropene) at 100 ppm was supplied to apple cv. Red Chief fruits by sealing in plastic bags containing the compound for 10 or 20 hours and storing in the cold and at room temperature. Fruits from each treatment were taken out at regular intervals of 10 days for 50 days for evaluation. MCP-treated fruits exhibited less softening than the controls. Fruits stored in the cold exhibited less softening than those stored at room temperature. Soluble solids were affected by MCP only at 30 and 40 days in storage, when the treated fruits exhibited higher soluble solids contents than the control fruits. Fruits at room temperature showed more soluble solid content than the control fruits. Fruits at room temperature showed more soluble solid content than cold-stored ones. Ethylene production and respiration were blocked in MCP treatments. MCP-treated fruits showed higher fruit firmness and titratable acidity, and this effect was higher at room temperature than in the cold. MCP affected starch ratings only at room temperature up to 30 days' storage.
