The insulation of freezers and refrigerators: how thick should it be?

Summary

Calculations are presented for the insulation losses for a range of sizes of domestic freezers and refrigerators with different insulation thicknesses. Power consumptions are also evaluated allowing for other losses, such as around doors, for a normal load pattern, and for compressor efficiencies. It is shown that the scope for power savings with increased insulation is only about 20% for freezers and 30% for refrigerators.
