Summary

The intrinsic energy efficiency of a transcritical CO2 cycle is less than that of the current widely used refrigeration systems. Utilization of an expander to replace the throttle valve for work recovery is considered the most effective way to improve the energy efficiency of the cycle. This article presents a detailed review of recent literature concerning various two-phase expanders in transcritical CO2 refrigeration cycles. The integration concepts for an expander in a transcritical CO2 refrigeration cycle are also evaluated.
