Humidity control and fresh air exchange in reefer containers: lowest feasible relative humidity, temperature and energy consumption.

Summary

This study aims to assess how both fresh air exchange and humidity control affect average relative humidity, power uptake, and supply air temperature in reefer containers.
Tests were done in a warm and humid climate chamber on two new empty 40 ft HC reefer container with two different popular refrigeration unit types. Tests were done at multiple combinations of container temperature setpoint (-3.5 or 20 °C), relative humidity setpoint (60 % or off) and fresh air exchange setting (0, 125, or 250 m3/h).
The most important conclusions are:
1. Dehumidification increases the units’ power uptake from approx. 2 to 8 kW, while fully opening the fresh air exchange adds at most 1.3 kW.
2. A humidity setpoint of 60 % is mostly infeasible, only one unit with closed vent reaches the setpoint.
3. For one of the two units the effect of fresh air exchange on relative humidity is negligible.
