Summary
During precooling of fresh produce in pallets, a pressure difference is created by a fan allowing airflow to pass through each box, hence, cooling the produce to the air temperature. Pressure difference across pallets of produce can range from 30 up to 500 Pa in industry, with the package design, internal package composition (presence of polyliner, produce geometry), pallet orientation and gaps between pallets all contributing to the established condition. In this work, the effect of internal packaging composition, pallet orientation and presence of gaps between pallets were quantified for a kiwifruit Modular Bulk Pack (MBP) design. A high pressure drop at the entrance of the pallet was identified, while pressure drop is minimum at the centre of the pallet followed by a slight increase on the pressure drop at the exit of the pallet. In addition, a decrease on the pressure distribution was identified in each box when gaps on the side of the pallets are present.
