Evaluation of double-lift cycles for waste heat powered refrigeration.

Author(s) : ERICKSON D. C., TANG J.

Summary

Waste heat powered absorption refrigeration is an economical and environmentally beneficial means of providing industrial refrigeration. When the waste heat temperature is too low to power a conventional single effect absorption cycle, the double-lift cycle is called for. The paper surveys and compares the various double-lift cycles available. To further improve the performance and reduce the first cost of double lift absorption refrigeration units, a new cycle based on the vapour exchange cycle plus generator-absorber heat exchange (GAX) has been designed. The paper describes the "Semi-GAX" cycle. Compared to conventional double-lift cycles, the semi-GAX cycle enjoys a 20% increase in COP, and requires less total heat duty, implying lower first cost.
