2.4 kW at 1.8 K refrigeration units for CERN LHC project: the Air Liquide system.

Summary

The LHC requires high capacity refrigeration systems operating below 2 K. For this project, Air Liquide has built one of the so-called "Cold compressor system". This installation, connected to a refrigerator providing 18 kW equivalent power at 4.5 K, able to absorb a cryogenic power of 2.4 kW at 1.8 K in nominal conditions. The very low pressure (1.5 kPa) needed on the low pressure He II saturated bath is obtained using cryogenic centrifugal compressors in a series arrangement, coupled with room temperature screw compressors. The thermodynamical cycle is presented and some technological details are given.
