Summary
As the globe moves toward net-zero emissions, the domestics heating supply will become largely electrified. Improving heat pumps efficiency to reduce energy and power consumption is critical to ensuring a sustainable future. The authors' team recently developed a flexible heat pump technology that incorporates a heat storage system into the conventional vapour compression cycle to collect, store, and reuse a portion of the sub-cooling heat from the hot liquid refrigerant. The stored heat can be used for a variety of beneficial purposes. In this paper, we present a study on the application of flexible heat pump technology for both space heating and domestic hot water simultaneously without resorting to a booster heater. The system will contain two parallel condensers that are at different temperatures. When the heat pump is operating in a charging mode, the first condenser for the space heating is engaged at a lower temperature (e.g., 40–45 °C). Once the heat storage has been fully charged, the heat pump will switch to discharging mode, in which the first condenser is bypassed, and the second condenser runs at a higher temperature (about 70°C) and the heat accumulated in the heat storage is discharged. The results show that, the dual-condenser flexible heat pump has a higher coefficient of performance (COP) than a conventional single-stage heat pump that just provides space heating and can thus effectively supply the hot temperature of the home up to 60–75 °C as needed.
