A new vacuum freeze system design for energy effective production of ice slurry.

Author(s) : ZAKERI G. R.

Summary

Pumpable ice slurry represents a new cool storage technology. Due to its advantages and potential it is gaining ground and applicability. A laboratory experimental ice slurry generator, based on the well-known vacuum freeze (triple-point) principle, has been built. One of the main objectives of the system is to avoid the limitations and shortcomings of earlier designs which rely mainly on a water vapour compression system. In this context, energy efficiency, simplicity and applicability for small ice production capacities become important issues in the design of the system. In this new system design, the generated sub-triple vapour is removed by a refrigerated surface. The key innovation of the new design is in its handling of the desublimated ice on the heat exchanger surface (evaporator).
