Summary

This article is the Spanish translation of an article presented at the IIR-Gustav Lorentzen conference on natural working fluids, in Copenhagen, Denmark (see this issue of the Bulletin, reference 2009-0359). The paper describes an air-source heat pump using flue gases from an auxiliary gas fired water heater to raise evaporating pressures during cold weather and to prevent formation of frost. A variant of this design was used for a period of fifteen years without problems of frosting or corrosion. The conditions under which such heat pumps are appropriate are described and figures are provided to show why ammonia is the ideal working fluid for such applications.
