A novel design of bivalent air source heat pump using ammonia as the working fluid.

Author(s) : PEARSON F.

Summary

The paper describes an air-source heat pump using flue gases from an auxiliary gas fired water heater to raise evaporating pressures during cold weather and to prevent formation of frost. A variant of this design was used for a period of fifteen years without problems of frosting or corrosion. The conditions under which such heat pumps are appropriate are described and figures are provided to show why ammonia is the ideal working fluid for such applications.
