A SOLAR SOURCE HEAT PUMP WITH REFRIGERANT-COOLED SOLAR COLLECTORS FOR COLD CLIMATES.

Summary

WHEREAS THE TEMPERATURE OF THE SOLAR COLLECTOR COOLED BY THE EVAPORATION OF REFRIGERANT MAY BE BELOW ITS AMBIENT TEMPERATURE, RELATIVELY HIGH SOLAR COLLECTOR EFFICIENCIES ARE OBTAINED. A REFRIGERANT DISTRIBUTION MANIFOLD HAVING MULTIPLE ORIFICES WAS USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH A REMOTE INDOOR LOCATED EXPANSION VALVE. THIS ARRANGEMENT RESULTED IN A RELATIVELY UNIFORM DISTRIBUTION OF REFRIGERANT FLOW IN EACH OF THE COLLECTORS. GLAZED COLLECTORS WERE FOUND SUPERIOR TO UNGLAZED COLLECTORS FOR OPERATION AT LOW AMBIENT TEMPERATURES AND HIGH LEVELS OF SOLAR INSOLATION ; UNGLAZED COLLECTORS WERE FOUND TO BE SUPERIOR FOR HIGH AMBIENT TEMPERATURES AND LOW LEVELS OF SOLAR INSOLATION. THE PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS OF SOLAR SOURCE HEAT PUMP SYSTEMS AND THE OPTIMUM COMPRESSOR DISPLACEMENT FOR A GIVEN COLLECTOR AREA MAY BE ESTIMATED USING A COMPUTER PROGRAM.
