Absorption cycle utilizing ionic liquid as working fluid.

Summary

The absorption cooling cycle has been in use in various forms for more than 100 years. Although the vapor compression cycle is now used for most air-conditioning and refrigeration applications, the wellknown refrigerant-absorbent systems (H2O/LiBr and NH3/H2O) are still being used for certain applications, particularly space cooling and industrial refrigeration. This paper examines the advantages of using room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) as new working fluids in absorption cycles. RTILs are a new class of solvent (molten salts) with a melting point defined to be less than 100°C. The authors have intensively studied solubilities (vapour-liquid equilibrium and vapour-liquid-liquid equilibrium) of various hydrofluorocarbons (HFC), CO2, and NH3 in RTIL mixtures. Their findings have led them to think about several practical applications including absorption cooling cycles which will be discussed in more detail.
