Advancing heat pump dryers for agricultural products processing: A critical review of drying chambers and systems.

Type of article: IJR article

Summary

Utilizing heat pump dryer for drying agricultural products is one of the effective methods in post-harvest pro cessing. Heat pump dryers are capable of providing controlled drying conditions and facilitating the superior preservation of agricultural products while minimizing energy consumption. However, suboptimal system and drying chamber designs can limit drying performance for agricultural products. The enhancements of the heat pump dryer are crucial for providing energy efficiency and high-quality dried agricultural products. Despite the increasing interest in heat pump drying technology, the enhancement of performance focusing on both the drying chamber and the heat pump drying system remains insufficiently explored. This review critically examines recent developments in heat pump dryers with emphasis on drying chamber design, heat pump system, airflow dis tribution, and heat and mass transfer characteristics, alongside key performance parameters of the heat pump system. The integration of solar energy and jet impingement technologies into the heat pump dryer was emphasized. The existing research gaps and future perspectives in terms of chamber and system aspects were identified. These insights facilitate informed decision-making in the development of research, industrial design, and practical implementation of advanced heat pump drying systems for food and post-harvest applications.
