Air as refrigerant: prospects and challenges.

Summary

The authors address the possibilities and main challenges when using air as the working fluid. Air-cycle systems are compact, lightweight and very reliable and has amongst others, been used for space conditioning in aircrafts and train compartments. Another promising application is industrial blast freezing. However, in order to improve the relatively low energy efficiency of the systems, there is still a considerable need for developement of compressors, expanders and heat exchangers.
