Thermodynamic analyses of air refrigerators.

Summary

Air refrigerators are considered as being among the most environmentally friendly machines, but it is well known that their COPs are rather poor if their components do not have high effectiveness. In the paper, thermodynamic analyses are developed to identify the requirements to the components for the systems which show good performance for practical use. The analyses were conducted in a non-dimensional manner in order to make the results universal. The thermodynamic performance was assessed with the COP ratio, i.e. the exergy efficiency instead of the COP, and were evaluated in terms of component effectivenesses. The systems analysed were single-stage and two-stage compression systems for both open and closed cycles; the latter system uses a compressor/expander unit. The results are presented as charts for application use.
