Air-conditioning unit using CO2 as refrigerant installed in a bus.

Author(s) : SONNEKALB M., KOEHLER J.

Summary

A prototype air-conditioning unit for buses was built and tested. The unit uses carbon dioxide as the refrigerant. The size and weight of the prototype unit are equivalent to those of a conventional mass-produced bus air-conditioning unit. The cooldown tests with a bus show that the unit maintains acceptable bus interior temperatures. In comparison with a typical conventional HFC-134a unit, the prototype had about 10% less capacity and was about 25% less efficient. Investigations of the compressor and heat exchangers indicate that there is significant potential for improvement of both capacity and efficiency.
