Ammonia in liquid chillers and heat pumps.

Author(s) : REINHART A.

Summary

First, the thermodynamic, thermophysical and environmental properties of ammonia are compared with those of R22 and R134a, and the physiological properties of ammonia are mentioned. The author then presents 2 examples of a successful application of ammonia, where the design engineer had to consider all the pros and cons of its use. The first example is of a liquid chiller for an industrial air-conditioning plant: a brine chiller combined with free cooling and an ice bank. The second example is of a heat pump for a public building that uses a spray-type evaporator. Lastly, the author presents different designs of tube-bundle evaporators.
