Ammonia the obvious refrigerant.

Author(s) : LINDBORG A.

Summary

As a result of the imminent CFC and HCFC phase out, ammonia and other natural working fluids will increase their use as refrigerant. Ammonia is one of the most commonly handled chemicals and the word "ammonia" immediately denotes fear, vile and evil stench, putrefaction and decay. As a result there is a tendency to increase legislation and formalities against the use of ammonia. It is also common to compare manufacture, storage and transportation of ammonia with ammonia refrigeration which is a total different activity. End users, not installers and refrigeration contractors, as well as society need better knowledge and understanding of ammonia. The responsibility for the safe ammonia refrigeration rests with owners-operators and is carried through with: 1) correct design by the contractor; 2) education of operators and maintenance of plant by owner; 3) active refrigeration industry to inform and support legislation. The existing codes, standards and legislation which refer to the use of ammonia in refrigeration is comprehensive and should be obeyed.
